Emergency Food and Shelter Program

BRAZOS COUNTY, GRIMES COUNTY, LEON COUNTY, AND ROBERTSON COUNTY HAVE BEEN AWARDED FEDERAL FUNDS MADE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY (DHS)/FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY UNDER THE EMERGENCY FOOD AND SHELTER PROGRAM (EFSP).

These counties have been chosen to receive the following award amounts to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the counties:

  • Brazos - $70,945.00

  • Grimes - $13,775.00

  • Leon - $8,151.00

  • Robertson - $7,034.00

The selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, The Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army, and United Way Worldwide. The Local Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.

A Local Board will determine how the funds awarded to Brazos, Grimes, Leon, and Robertson county are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. EFSP was created in 1983 to supplement and expand the work of local social service agencies, both nonprofit and governmental, to help people with economic emergencies (not disaster-related [i.e., fires of any kind, floods, tornadoes, etc.] emergencies). Therefore, EFSP funds are not to be used to provide economic assistance for circumstances that are the immediate result of a disaster situation. The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government 2) be eligible to receive Federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.

Complete applications are due to United Way of the Brazos Valley, the EFSP Local Board Chair, by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, May 30, 2018.

It is highly recommended that agencies have a representative attend the EFSP Local Board meeting on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 2:00 pm in the community room of The Bank & Trust (TB&T) of Bryan/College Station. 2900 S. Texas Avenue, Bryan, TX 77802

Each agency will be given 5 minutes to present their application to the Board. Agencies not represented will have their application read to the EFSP Local Board. Supplemental information will not be presented if you do not attend the meeting. It is the responsibility of the agency applying for funds to ensure their interests are adequately represented at the Local Board meeting.

Agencies will be notified of funding by June 8, 2018.
